As I drove into work this week, enjoying the reprieve from the summer heat, I began to think about how I really relish every day. Each day I am here is a gift. Each day comes with its own happy moments that are meant to be fully enjoyed. It is rare that I wish a day away, aside from wishing it is always 5:00 when I'm at work, but even then, I try to enjoy each moment. I don't like to wish my life away.
Sure I have days and weeks where I just can't muster up the strength to be happy because some days are just plain crap. But I always know that there will be some lesson to be had from them, and that at least tomorrow, I will be able to look back on them and be glad they are over. In other words, there is always good to come out of a bad day. It just might be the fact that the sun went down on it.
I wasn't always such a happy and optimistic person. In fact, I used to be the complete opposite. I used to be the girl who loved it when everyone knew I was mad or upset. Then somewhere along the way, I decided that attitude didn't suit me. I was tired of being a half empty girl and wanted to try living life on the other side of the glass. It didn't happen over night, and it wasn't a short road. At first it took a lot of conscious effort on my part. But now at the age of 31, I can look back on the past 8+ years of my life knowing that I lived each day to the fullest.
When I decided to be an optimistic girl, I also decided that I wanted to live my life without regrets. I didn't want to look back on my life anymore and wish that I had had a better attitude or outlook. I didn't want to look back and say that I wished I had done something different. I remember I started thinking that way when I was around 22 or 23.
Long before I started going through infertility, I decided it was important to learn from the bad things that happen in our lives. I even instituted that in my dating life. When relationships would fail, I would look back on all of the things that were good about it and what I learned from it. I was also the girl who tried to remain friends after a breakup by making the argument that we obviously liked each other enough to date, so why did that mean the connection couldn't remain friendly afterward? It was rare for me to end a relationship badly and to where it was awkward to see an ex afterward. At least for me. I can't speak for the guys.
Each day when I get up, I am grateful for another day. Another day with my husband, daughter, dogs, family, and friends. I am grateful for all of them. I cherish each second I spend with my husband and daughter in the morning. When I go to work, I am grateful that I have a job, that I work with such wonderful people, and that I do what I enjoy. I am excited to see my friends, and on my bad days, I know I at least have lunches with my best friends J and A to look forward to. Some days I think if that is all I have to look forward to, then I am a lucky gal because I have those relationships and the opportunity to be with my girls and enjoy them to the fullest.
Most of the time the only reason I wish it was 5:00 is because I just can't wait to go get my Baby Bean. She is the light of my life, and I love to hold her, be with her, see her smile, hear her giggle. I love to hear her talk. I love to watch her dance. I love to watch her suck her thumb while she holds on to her toys. I love everything about her.
When we get home, I can't wait for Hubs to get home so that we can all be together as a family until Baby Bean goes to bed, and then I love that it is mom and dad time. Nothing soothes my soul like snuggling into my husband's arms, smelling him, taking him in while we watch TV together. I could lay there forever. I love the relationship we have and how much we love each other.
Admittedly, there is more in each day that I could enjoy more or do more or be more. But I never beat myself up when I don't because I always give myself the grace to realize that I cannot do and be everything. I do the best I can, and that is all I can ask of myself.
A couple of years ago, the little brother of a friend of mine drowned. Like my friend, his brother had one of the most amazing outlooks on life. He was always positive and upbeat, no matter what happened. Life handed him some huge lemons, but he always made the best lemonade out of them and shared it with everyone. Before Craig passed, he kept a blog. There was one post that summed up his outlook on life, and it was so inspirational. I want to share with you one of my favorite things from that post.
"'Men are that they might have joy!' Life is good. Laughter heals. Life is funny. There are funny things that happen every day even in the worst of situations. Bad days make good stories. There is a time to laugh and a time to cry. It's funny that laughter and tears come together so easily."
He was wise beyond his years, and I learned so much from him and his brother. They were part of my inspiration for becoming who I am today.
Life is meant to be enjoyed, not simply gotten through. It is up to us to find the good things and make the most of the precious time we are given.
