I also like it despite the fact that my pooch has to be incoluated against every single type of insect bite you could ever think of, which I NEVER had to worry about before. I never had to worry about fleas or ticks before, and really not even mosquitos for that matter. But after having been here for a couple of weeks, I have actually gone into panic mode trying to purchase anti-flee meds, and Heartguard to prevent heart worms. Maggie has always been on Hearguard, but I only had to give it to her Apr-Oct where we lived before; here, its 12 months out of the year. Its not a surprise to me that in the excitement of the move I didn't think to grab her Heartguard out of the kitchen before the mover's packed it up, and now it is sitting in storage with the rest of our stuff for the next two weeks. I found out the hard way that vets here won't give you a box until they have tested your dog for heart worms, so Hubs gets to take Mags to the vet tomorrow to have her tested. UGH!
The things I am really finding I like about Texas so far are:
- AWESOME FOOD! (Steaks, Cajun, Tai, You Name It! *drooling*)
- Lovely scenery
- Tons of parks
- Friendly people
- The average speed limit is 45-55
- There aren't very many people on the roads with the exception of rush hour
- People get out of your way if you want to go faster than them (most of the time)
- The number of stupid drivers is exponentially smaller than where we lived before
- Did I mention awesome food yet?
Things I could do without:
- BUGS! Spiders!
- Melting makeup due to humidity
- Tornado warnings (although I kind of find them commical)
- No mountains
- Temporary housing with walls made out of rice paper
I hate to admit it, and especially to my family, but I really do like it here. I can't believe how comfortable I am here and how much I already feel like I belong. I just wish I was better at making friends. I am actually a little shy, and it takes me a while to warm up to people enough to be comfortable around them. I know, weird. I'm working on it though. I miss having friends, and I am starting to feel lonely.
My favorite part about being here today (minus the tornado warning): my new pay check! :D I can get used to that number with a quickness. The thing that makes my pay check even better is days like today when I get to dig into my job and I honestly think, "Man, they are paying me to do this! This is awesome!" I actually get to walk out of work feeling like I earned that check. That was rare in my last job.

ACK TORNADOES! When I spent time in Texas, that was my worst fear. I really like Northeast Texas though. I liked Dallas but LOVED Ft. Worth. I'm glad you're finding good stuff! And yes.. the bugs... I do remember that. We have that here too, but more of the flying stuff. There I found more crawly stuff. Good times. ;-)
BTW.. if you go just about an hour south of Dallas, you start to hit hill country and it's GORGEOUS. That might help your craving for mountains. I grew up IN the mountains as well, so it takes me some to get over that too. But the flowers should be blooming down there, there are plateaus (that excited me b/c I had never seen them. ;-), roadrunners and the scissor-tailed flycatchers should be there soon in all their gorgeous breeding display regalia. Look them up so you can see how incredibly beautiful they are.
Check out Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose. I interned there and it's beautiful. There's also a dinosaur park next to it where they found dinosaur footprints preserved in a river bed and you can go see them! I LOVED that.

Great to hear how you are settling in, it would take me ages to get used to the humidity, but not long at all to get used to the food! I am sure you will soon make friends, look at how you went along and got that fabulous job of yours, if you can achieve that, you can achieve anything. x
P.S. I forgot to mention that I LOVED the pulling over to the side of the road if they're going too slow! Such a novel thing! Also.. everyone waving to everyone else. It took me a while to realize that you don't have to know someone in TX to wave to them.. and in fact it's rude if you don't wave!!! haha

I have several friends who live/have lived in TX and they all (also) swear that the food is so much better down there. Hmm.
I would love to visit Texas. I love green, humid climates! And all of your other listed qualities are very appealing too!
